But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 2 Peter 3:5 (NIV).
The father of a friend of mine died yesterday. Ervin Williams was 88. He’s the father of two, and wife of Doris, who journeyed to Heaven 27 years ago. I first met Mr. Williams in 1983, when my Dad and I walked into the First Presbyterian Church in Mitchell, Indiana one August Sunday morning. I’d spent the previous week attending Mitchell High with Erv’s son, Dave, who quickly became one of my best friends. Mr. Williams came up to my Dad and I after service and introduced himself. After that, every Sunday, you could count on his friendly handshake and welcoming smile. I can honestly say he was one of the most devout, honest Christians I’ve ever known; a truly kind, decent man simply living out his faith.
Why mention this today and in the context of this end-times-related verse? Aside from eulogizing one of my role models in Christ, Erv Williams got to meet Jesus yesterday. He got to see Him face to face, and I believe with all my heart he got a big hug from Jesus. He got to see Doris again, and his own parents. And long-departed family, friends, and people he’s wanted to meet all through history. By now, he may have even met Peter. I mention all this because yesterday was the end of Mr. Williams’ long life yet it was the beginning of a much longer one; a renewed life outside the boundaries of time as we know it. He’s in heaven with the Lord and is living a life of new and exciting eternal meaning.
Yesterday, he met the same God who created this Earth we live on. The Triune God who made Himself known to us through His Son and His Spirit is the same one who created the earth as is recorded in Genesis: the same Earth that Adam and Noah and Moses and Elijah and Peter and John and Jesus and all the other people we’ve met through the Bible knew. God spoke this place into existence, re-made it through a flood, and will end it at a time only He knows. It’s the same place, the same Earth, the same people, the same God. God promised our lives would end, and that this earthly home we know would as well. Yet He also gave us His Son, who is the way out of ending. If you aren’t ready, take up Jesus’ invitation to know Him now and let Him make You ready. Erv Williams did and it made all the difference.

Lord Jesus, thank You for the miracle of our home here. And thank You for the blessing of friends like Ervin Williams. Take care of him till we all meet again with You.
