Practical Proverbial, from Galatians, 28 July 2022. Today’s topic: We Too

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.  Galatians 5:24

So, if you have accepted Jesus and His salvation, you no longer have to worry about sin bothering you, right?   Yes.   And no; you knew this, of course.

But, yes, you did!   The spiritual damnation that comes with rejecting Jesus isn’t in your future.   You don’t have to let it worry you now.   You get to embrace the peace right now that comes from knowing your future is secure.   That means you get to live more fully every day, enjoying each day, accepting each one as it comes as a gift from God Himself.   You get to get to know Jesus more by diving into His Word, by communing with Him in prayer and praise, by letting Him reshape how you think about things and, more importantly, how you treat your fellow man.

And then depression sets in, knowing you’re tempted by the flesh and its passions and desires. Then there’s the depression of knowing you sometimes make mistakes, just like you did before you knew Jesus.   Sometimes, when you give in to sin after becoming a believer, you feel worse than you ever did when you simply went wherever sin took you.

After all, think about Peter.   He was the leader of the Disciples.  He was Jesus’ closest friend.   He swore to fight to the death for Jesus.   And then, when Jesus needed his moral support the most, Peter lied to save his own skin three times.   He had three days to think about it, to let devastation rule   Imagine how Peter must have felt.

Then imagine how Peter felt when he saw Jesus that Easter Sunday.  When the man who Roman Jerusalem murdered was alive again.   Imagine how Peter must have felt to realize down to his bones that everything Jesus ever said was true, and that Jesus had crucified sin and sinful flesh while the Romans were crucifying Him.  That Jesus would forgive even His betrayers.

Imagine that.   It’s all true.   It’s for you.  We’re forgiven too.

No, sin won’t leave you alone.   When you accept Jesus into your life, in fact, it’s going to attack you even harder.  When that happens – and it will – don’t beat yourself up.   Jesus has killed and buried your old self, your old life that was controlled by your lusts, desires, and sins.   You’re a new you thanks to Him.   When it doesn’t feel that way – and sometimes it won’t – remind yourself that you’re important enough to die for because that’s exactly what Jesus did.  He who is loving, joyful, peaceful and the rest, did it for all of us, sinful you and me included.

Lord Jesus, all my praise to You for crucifying my old sinful nature, for doing away with it.
